This week come on down to one of our Community Food Markets and look for Green Peppers! Listen to them sizzle when creating food favorites like fajitas or tacos! Yum.

We have Butternut Squash at the market this week! Enjoy as a sweet and tasty soup or as a roasted side this week! Don’t forget that the seeds are edible too, a quick toast in the oven will make them crispy. Add olive oil and your favorite seasoning. Mine is chili powder.

Community Food Market Schedule Changes

We have decided to make a couple changes to our Community Food Market Schedule and unfortunately, we will be discontinuing our Thursday Markets starting this Thursday. However, we encourage everyone to join us at our Saturday Markets that will be running every 1st and 3rd Saturday of the month until the end of this year. Check out the times and locations of our Saturday markets here.

Seed Saver’s Meet Up #6

Interested in seed security in your community? Want to learn how to save seeds and join in a growing community of people wanting to share their knowledge, their passions, and their seeds? The Cedar Cottage Food Network, in partnership with the Vancouver Public Library – Kensington branch has teamed up for the second season of our seed saving group in Cedar Cottage.

At our 6th seed savers meet-up, we’ll harvest the rest of our seeds at Kingcrest, clean up the bed and plant some garlic! This also functions as an ongoing seed swap so bring your extra seeds and seedlings to share with the community.

Saturday October 20th, 11am-1pm at Kensington Library and Kingcrest Community Garden.

No previous experience needed, and no garden needed!

Winter Garden Prep Work Party at Copley Orchard

This event takes place on unceded and occupied Coast Salish territory, specifically that of the Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish), xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), and mi ce:p kʷətxʷiləm (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations.

This will be the last work party at Copley Orchard work party this year and we will spend it preparing the orchard for the coming winter months. Work will include compost turning, pruning and finishing lasagna mulch on the native plant bed. Come celebrate the wonderful growing season we’ve had!

Come learn what the orchard it all about and meet some wonderful gardening neighbours! There will be a potluck lunch beginning at 1pm for all orchard members and workshop participants.

Copley Orchard Apple Picking and Pressing Work Party

Hello! The apples are getting very ready, so we are shifting the harvest day to Sunday, September 23rd from 10am-2pm.

***Note the date change, previously this was taking place on Sept 29th and Oct 13th. Now it’s all in one day!****

Come on out to help harvest the apples, press juice, and take home apples in apple and juice form! If you can, bring bags to take home apples, and jars to take home juice.

Picking and Pressing : 10am-1pm
Potluck (bring your own dish and cutlery): 1-2pm

As a part of this months Copley Orchard work party, Cedar Cottage Food Network will facilitate a workshop on Wild edible and medicinal plants in the garden and together we will lasagna mulch a bed to prepare for planting a native plant garden next spring.

Aug 25th Medicine Wheel Garden Work Party

Medicine Wheel Garden work party (3)This event takes place on unceded and occupied Coast Salish territory, specifically that of the Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish), xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), and mi ce:p kʷətxʷiləm (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations.

We need your help with tending the garden! We’ll be weeding, planting and sharing knowledge together. Participate in tea tasting and learn about local native, medicinal plants.

The garden was created in September 2017 for the Wild Salmon Caravan and was built to provide space for our urban communities to access traditional medicine plants of the Coast Salish Peoples, while also creating a space of sanctuary and healing.

* All Experience Levels & Ages Welcome

* Food & Drink Provided

***Accessibility notes: The Trout Lake Community Centre is within a short walking distance and includes wheel chair accessible and gender neutral washrooms. All pathways are wheel chair accessible and terrain is level. There will be some heavy lifting and tough work, but all bodies are welcome to participate in any way they can.
